Have you been unemployed for too long and you just can’t seem to catch a break? Maybe it’s time to evaluate your job search strategy and make some changes.
Determine your direction. All too often we meet job seekers who, when asked what type of position they are looking for, will say “I’ll do anything!” What that means to us is, wow, you seem kind of flakey and have no idea what you are looking for. What are your skills? What gets you excited?
Be true to yourself. Don’t apply to every position you come across. When we see that someone has applied for one position that pays $100K and another that pays $40K, that raises some major red flags! You are either selling yourself really short and are applying for something that you are overqualified for, or you are wasting everyone’s time by applying for something that you are extremely underqualified for. You know better than anyone else what you are capable of and how much you should be paid.
Work with a recruiter. If you haven’t started working with a recruiter yet, you better get in the game! Meeting with a recruiter is free and will greatly increase your chances of getting a new position. Recruiters specialize in placing candidates in targeted fields and have many great contacts in your industry. By working with a recruiter you can put together a list of target positions and companies that are if interest to you and develop a strategy on how to get your foot in the door. Join a new networking group. Are you getting anything out of your current networking group, or maybe you were never involved with one at all? Start getting to know new people in your field. You never know when they might be looking for someone to join your team!
Stop waiting for someone to contact YOU. So many people get frustrated that they aren’t being contacted for a job opportunity. With such a competitive job market, it’s important that you remind your recruiter that you are still available for work. More specifically, check the job boards regularly for new job postings that interest you. If you are a fit, then apply! Being proactive is a HUGE must when it comes to a successful job search.
Maybe your strategy is really just to have a strategy. Get down to business and go after your ideal job!
