You are well aware of the importance of a first impression, which is why you wear a suit to a job interview. Right? Well, then why do so many job seekers dress casually when attending a job fair? We are frequently amazed by the number of candidates we see at job fairs who come in wearing t-shirts and torn jeans. It’s extremely important to come to a job fair well prepped and well groomed. Here are a few tips:

· DO wear a suit. It’s always better to be overdressed!
· DO NOT come in smelling of cigarettes. There are few things worse than trying to talk to someone who reeks of an ash tray.
· DO come prepared with multiple copies of your resume. It would be awful to run out of resumes before the end of the fair, so be sure to have more than you think you will need.
· DO have an elevator speech. Employers will be meeting with dozens of people that day, so have a short pitch ready to make you stand out from everyone else.
· DO NOT be rude or unprofessional, you never know who might be a key decision maker.
· DO your research. Find out ahead of time which employers will be there and decide who you want to talk to. Showing that you know a thing or two about their company is a huge plus!
· DO arrive early. Get there before the crowd to make sure you can see the employers that interest you the most.
· DO ask for a business card. Keep track of who you talked to and what potential positions you talked about.
· DO follow up with employers. After being bombarded by job seekers all day long, it may become difficult for employers to remember everyone. Send a thank you email to remind them about your specific conversation and thank them for their time.
· DO treat a job fair like you would an interview. Follow these steps above, and you’re sure to stand out from the crowd.
