Creating a Personal Development Plan

This week’s blog is inspired by one of my favorite quotes:

“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you’ve imagined.” - Thoreau

Think back to when you were a child. What made you happy then? Do the same things still make you happy today? Where did you see yourself when you looked into the future? Are you there yet? Why not? Sorry if I seem like your mother with the 20 questions, but it’s time for you to focus on yourself!
Grab a pen and notebook. Here’s what I want you to do: Take note of what makes you happy and whether or not those things (not necessarily physical items) are actually present in your life. If they are then great! If not, it’s time to develop a plan to get you there. Now I want you to write down the obstacles that are preventing you from getting what you want. These things could be lack of money, time, power, ambition, education, etc. Looking at this list, what can you do to overcome these obstacles? Taking baby steps towards each goal is the best way to get there. Maybe these obstacles are more of an excuse than anything else. Fear of failure can be your worst enemy.

Jot down all of the things that you have to offer – personally and professionally. Do you play on those attributes or do you let them go to waste? Write down a few different ideas for how you can use your best qualities to get you to where you want to be. For example, maybe one of your best qualities is that you are outgoing and love meeting new people. Are you in the position, personally or professionally, to network and socialize?

This whole practice of writing things down may seem silly, but trust me, it will help you to realize where you are who you are, and what you what you want to be. You deserve the chance to let your best self shine, so what’s holding you back?
