Once looked at negatively, career coaching now has a more positive image. Also known as leadership development, career coaching is when an outsider is brought into an organization to prepare employees for a promotion or new position. It is also less frequently used to address poor performance issues.

What does your career path look like at your organization? Have you expressed interest in what direction you would like to take, or maybe even what direction your boss would like to see you head in? If yes, then what are you doing to prepare for these next steps?

Having someone there who is solely committed to your success is not only great for morale but shows that the company is helping to groom their successors.  Your coach will help to prepare you for your future position, while also developing and improving your leadership skills.

Talk to your boss about the benefits of assigning you to a career coach (it’s best if you are able to choose from a few different coaches to ensure a good personality fit):

Benefits to you:

- Enhanced relationships with supervisors

- Strengthened relationships with direct reports and peers

- Increased job satisfaction

- Self-improvement

- Clearer career path

- Direct feedback on progress

Benefits to the company:

- Improved job performance

- Higher employee morale

- Increased productivity

- Retention of high-performers

- Better collaboration across organization

- Improved bottom line
