1.      Spread the word. Referrals essentially equate to free business! Ask satisfied clients to talk you up to their own clients. This word-of-mouth advertising will bring in added business and save money on advertising.

2.       Go green. There are so many places you can save money at work by taking the green approach. Try getting energy efficient light bulbs and appliances for starters. For more details on how your company can go green, take a look at my previous blog: Go Green or Go Home.

3.       Work from home.  Allowing your employees to work from home would save an extraordinary amount of money. The freedom from paying for a physical location and utilities is enough to give you warm and fuzzies isn’t it?! For some businesses, I understand this isn’t an option, but only you can determine that.

Companies are Feeling the Holiday Cheer!

Even with a struggling economy, companies realize that their employees are in need of some holiday cheer. This year bosses are handing out more bonuses and gifts than ever before. In fact, according to a CareerBuilder survey, “40% of employers plan to give their employees holiday bonuses this year, up from 33% in 2010.”

The problem with cash bonuses (not that getting cash is a real problem) is the rate of taxation. Your bonus of $1,000 will end up looking more like $600…Ouch! That’s why some companies prefer to buy actual gifts instead, that way you get to enjoy your gift instead of giving 40% of it back to the government.

Welcome to our two-part blog series about video interviewing. This week’s blog discusses when employers should use video interviewing versus other forms of interviewing, while next week’s blog will talk about how to best prepare for these video interviews.

Interviewing can be costly and time consuming, but now there are so many different ways for companies to screen candidates without breaking the bank. Depending on the number of candidates under consideration for a given job opening, it can sometimes be useful to do a brief phone interview before meeting someone in person. If all goes well, it’s time for the second round. If the candidate is local, it’s always best to bring him/her in for a face-to-face meeting. On the other hand, candidates may be hundreds of miles away… so what to do now? Unless you have the confidence to hire solely off of a phone interview, there are two options remaining: face-to-face interview or video interview.

Today’s job market is extremely competitive, with many more applicants for each open position. With this come applicants who are overqualified for the positions they are applying for.  Some employers see this as a red flag; some see it as great opportunity.

Top 3 Reasons to Hire Contract Employees

1.      Cost Savings – One of the major benefits of hiring a contract employee is that you are actually saving a significant amount of time and money. Contractors are employees of the staffing agency you hired them through. Therefore, the agency -not you, is responsible for all costs associated with the employee. This includes time spent recruiting as well as everything from payroll to benefits.

2.      Trial Period – Hiring a temporary employee is basically a “try before you buy.” Many companies are now hiring employees on a contract-to-hire basis. This allows you, the employer, to make sure that the contract employee is the right fit for the position and for the company. This also works the other way around. The contract employee needs to make sure that they feel comfortable there, too. If either party decides that it’s not a good fit, then no worries – there are no strings attached at the end of the contract.

3.      Project Help – With today’s economy, maybe you don’t have the budget to add on a full-time employee, but you still need help getting the work done. What to do, what to do...? Enter: Contract Employee. During your busy time, think about hiring a contractor to come in and help you through the rush. This way you only have to pay for the amount of time the employee is on site, then, once the project is complete, you can part ways. Or, maybe you will decide that this employee would make a great addition to your team and the HR budget miraculously grows to accommodate this diamond in the rough employee.

Convinced? Good, because now it’s time for a shameless plug: ER Associates has contract employees available NOW! Call our Recruiting Manager, Paulina Gallelli, at 585.420.3910 for information on how we can help you with your temporary staffing needs.
