As if looking for a job isn’t already hard enough, try looking for a job AND being pregnant. Disclaimer: I am not speaking from experience on this one, so as usual, this is just my opinion. Let me start by saying, it’s completely illegal for a hiring manager/recruiter to ask you if you’re pregnant. However, if you are obviously showing, it’s usually best to address the topic (you’re not fooling anyone).

If you are showing, the hiring manager has the legal right to ask if you are physically capable of handling the daily responsibilities associated with this job. That might include the ability to lift 40lbs on a regular basis or being on your feet all day. Before interviewing for a job, it’s important to know what the requirements are as well as if you truly are capable of fully accomplishing the necessary tasks.

There’s no better time to look for a new job than when you actually have a job. Consider yourself lucky that you are gainfully employed and are choosing to seek alternative employment. It can, however, get tricky to find time to job search, interview and maintain your cool during the process. The following tips should help you as you embark on your job search while you are already employed:

As the social media world changes, so do hiring techniques and practices. The newest, although still uncommon, form of recruiting for job candidates is Pinterest. For those of you unfamiliar with Pinterest, it’s a new social media site similar to an online pin board. Users “pin” photos of their favorite items, crafts, recipes, etc.

April is child abuse prevention month, and as multiple members of the ER Associates family are strong advocates for the Bivona Child Advocacy Center, we thought it essential to educate our friends, clients and candidates about the great things Bivona does in our own backyard.

Bivona Child Advocacy Center is a safe, welcoming place where children who have been sexually or physically abused can begin their journey of healing. Bivona staff facilitate an under-one-roof collaboration of social and legal agencies to protect, treat and counsel child victims and their families, and to investigate and prosecute the abusers. Bivona provides a compassionate, efficient, cost effective infrastructure for child abuse intervention.

Accepting Constructive Criticism

Just as it’s important in everyday life, it’s even more important to learn how to accept constructive criticism in the staffing and recruiting world. When you are able to take advice from others you will see yourself in a whole new (and better) light.

·         Understand that no one is perfect. Don’t take criticism too personally. Just because someone is offering you advice on how to improve your skills doesn’t mean they think you are the pits. Recruiters WANT you to succeed. Open and honest communication is an essential part of the business. Please don’t be too hard on yourself and remember that the person in front of you isn’t perfect either (no need to tell us, we already know that).

5 Signs of Shady Recruiters & Job-Seekers

As is the case in all industries, there can be some shady business in the staffing world, too. Today it’s my mission to help you recognize shady recruiters and shady job-seekers. First, it’s best to learn what a recruiter should do before you understand what they shouldn’t do.

A seasoned recruiter will take the time to understand your best interests as well as those of the client. You should ALWAYS know where your resume is being sent. Furthermore, you should view your relationship with a recruiter as a partnership. A good recruiter will ask you all the right questions and know exactly what you are looking for in the ideal position. They should keep you in the loop on progress and provide you with timely feedback throughout the process.

The purpose of a personal pitch is to get the person hooked and eager to learn more about you. This pitch is often called an elevator pitch as you should be able to get your point across in a short amount of time as if you were on (yes, you guessed it) an elevator! Here are the three most import things to remember when preparing and perfecting your pitch:

You probably studied a foreign language in high school and college to get those mandatory credits needed for your degree, but have you kept up with your skills?

As our culture in America continues to grow more and more diverse, the need for bilingual (or even multilingual employees) is on the rise. According to the 2010 American Community Survey conducted by the US Census Bureau, Spanish is the primary language spoken at home by almost 37 million people aged five or older.

I read a great article a few weeks ago by Shawn Parr of Fast Company, titled “Culture Eats Strategy for Lunch.” I found it to be such an eye-opener. The premise of the article is that without the appropriate work culture, a business strategy is basically useless. Every company has (or should have) a core set of values. These values are often written in brochures, and maybe scrolled across a white board. But how are you actually practicing and living the values that you have established? Without a solid team and shared values, your strategy will undoubtedly fail.

So how do you create a winning culture?

8 Ways to Save Your Company Money

1.      Spread the word. Referrals essentially equate to free business! Ask satisfied clients to talk you up to their own clients. This word-of-mouth advertising will bring in added business and save money on advertising.

2.       Go green. There are so many places you can save money at work by taking the green approach. Try getting energy efficient light bulbs and appliances for starters. For more details on how your company can go green, take a look at my previous blog: Go Green or Go Home.

3.       Work from home.  Allowing your employees to work from home would save an extraordinary amount of money. The freedom from paying for a physical location and utilities is enough to give you warm and fuzzies isn’t it?! For some businesses, I understand this isn’t an option, but only you can determine that.

Have you ever been tempted to add something to your resume because it sounds good? Or on the other hand, maybe you conveniently decided to leave some key details out of your resume in hopes that no one would notice? If there is one piece of advice I could pass along to job seekers it would be this: Honesty is the best policy! Lies will always catch up with you, it’s just a matter of time.

Have you been unemployed for too long and you just can’t seem to catch a break? Maybe it’s time to evaluate your job search strategy and make some changes.

Determine your direction. All too often we meet job seekers who, when asked what type of position they are looking for, will say “I’ll do anything!” What that means to us is, wow, you seem kind of flakey and have no idea what you are looking for.  What are your skills? What gets you excited?

Be true to yourself. Don’t apply to every position you come across. When we see that someone has applied for one position that pays $100K and another that pays $40K, that raises some major red flags! You are either selling yourself really short and are applying for something that you are overqualified for, or you are wasting everyone’s time by applying for something that you are extremely underqualified for. You know better than anyone else what you are capable of and how much you should be paid.

Workers’ Compensation & the Negative Impact on the Job Market

With the job market continuing to struggle, an influx in workers’ comp cases is not helping the matter. An increasingly high amount of employees are taking advantage of their employers and insurance companies. Injured workers are frequently cheating the system by exaggerating injuries and collecting money from workers’ comp suits.

While employees may have legitimate claims, many are slow to get back to work because there are limited job options and staying at home is just, well…easier. Other employees are working under the table at other jobs while they collect money from the insurance companies. Not only is this highly illegal, but it’s extremely damaging to the job market.

Companies are Feeling the Holiday Cheer!

Even with a struggling economy, companies realize that their employees are in need of some holiday cheer. This year bosses are handing out more bonuses and gifts than ever before. In fact, according to a CareerBuilder survey, “40% of employers plan to give their employees holiday bonuses this year, up from 33% in 2010.”

The problem with cash bonuses (not that getting cash is a real problem) is the rate of taxation. Your bonus of $1,000 will end up looking more like $600…Ouch! That’s why some companies prefer to buy actual gifts instead, that way you get to enjoy your gift instead of giving 40% of it back to the government.

Our December non-profit of the month is the Hillside Special Santas Program of the Hillside Family of Agencies (HFA). The program goes to benefit children and families served by Crestwood Children’s Center, Hillside Children’s Center, Hillside Work-Scholarship Connection and Snell Farm Children’s Center. Without the Hillside Special Santas, many of these families would not have gifts to open or holiday meals to enjoy. HFA has set a goal to provide each child three gifts and each family a grocery card for their holiday meal.
